Cash Flow Management

Expert Tips on Managing Cash Flow

By Michael Adducci
Senior Vice President, Business Banking

As a commercial lender at North American Banking Company, I’ve worked with business owners across a wide range of industries—and one of the most consistent challenges I see is managing cash flow. It’s no exaggeration to say that cash flow is the lifeblood of a business. Even profitable companies can run into serious trouble if they don’t have the liquidity to meet day-to-day obligations.

Cash flow management is especially difficult for newer businesses and those with seasonal fluctuations. In those situations, expenses often exceed revenue at various points in the year. Regardless of the industry or business lifecycle, having reliable access to working capital is essential for long-term success.

That’s where a strong banking relationship can make a meaningful difference. At North American Banking Company, we work closely with our clients to provide the tools and financing solutions they need—whether that’s a business loan, line of credit, credit card, merchant services, or cash management platform. These solutions are all designed with one goal in mind: to help you maintain stability and ensure your cash flow remains positive.

One of the most important steps a business owner can take is to build a relationship with a banker before there’s an urgent need. I regularly meet with my clients to understand their business goals, financial challenges, and future plans. This ongoing dialogue helps ensure that when a need does arise—whether it’s an unexpected expense or a growth opportunity—I can respond quickly and with the full context in mind. Because our decisions are made locally, we’re able to move faster and with more flexibility than larger institutions.

Another area where many business owners struggle is forecasting. I often speak with clients who believe they’re in a strong cash position—until they account for upcoming tax obligations, vendor payments, or a slowdown in receivables. Without proper forecasting, even a successful business can face liquidity issues.
With that in mind, here are three key tips I share with clients to help them stay ahead of potential cash flow challenges:

Tip #1:
The past does not predict the future. Just because a vendor has extended favorable terms in the past doesn’t guarantee they will continue to do so. Likewise, a customer who typically pays up front may experience delays. Building contingency plans into your cash flow model is essential.

Tip #2:
Think long-term. Consider where your business will be in the next 12, 24, or 36 months. What happens when a major customer contract comes up for renewal? Will your equipment still meet your needs a few years from now? Asking these questions today can help you make better-informed decisions for tomorrow.

Tip #3:
Utilize your bank’s cash management services. At North American Banking Company, we offer a full range of services to help businesses manage their cash more efficiently—including remote deposit, automatic sweeps, and electronic funds transfers that allow you to schedule payments right on the due date. Our merchant services platform is also designed to ensure fast, transparent processing of credit card transactions without hidden fees or unnecessary delays.

If you’d like to review your current approach or explore new solutions, I’d be happy to start a conversation. At North American Banking Company, we see you as more than just a set of financial statements. We’re here to support your business with personalized service, local decision-making, and a commitment to your success.
