Understanding Brushing Scams

What Are Brushing Scams and How to Protect Yourself

"Brushing" is a growing scam where scammers send you unsolicited packages, often filled with cheap, low-value items. At first glance, these packages might seem harmless, but they’re part of a larger scheme. Scammers use your address and information to create fake online orders, allowing them to post fake positive reviews to boost their products’ ratings. The twist? Many of these packages now include QR codes designed to trick you into scanning them.

How Brushing Scams Work

  1. Fake Orders: Scammers create fake orders in your name using your real address. They then ship cheap items like trinkets, electronics, or even empty boxes. You’re not charged for the items, but your information is being exploited.
  2. Fake Reviews: Once the package is marked as delivered, scammers post positive reviews on the retailer’s website using your identity, making the products look more popular and trustworthy than they are.
  3. QR Code Threat: Some scammers include QR codes in these packages, tempting recipients to scan them. Scanning the code can lead to malicious websites or prompt the download of malware, potentially giving scammers access to your personal data or infecting your device.

Tips to Protect Yourself from Brushing Scams

  1. Don’t Scan Suspicious QR Codes – Avoid scanning QR codes from unsolicited packages, as they can lead to malware or phishing sites.
  2. Keep an Eye on Your Online Accounts – Regularly monitor your online shopping and financial accounts for any unusual activity, such as unauthorized orders or changes.
  3. Secure Your Devices – Use strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and make sure your phone and computer security software are up to date.
  4. Report the Packages – If you receive a suspicious package, contact the retailer where the package came from and file a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This can help stop the scammer’s activities.
  5. Avoid Leaving Personal Info in Reviews – Be cautious about the information you share in online reviews, as scammers could misuse it.
