Joe Arends

Senior Vice President, Business Banking

Joe developed an early love of numbers and earned a degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Willmar Community College. He planned to become a certified public accountant, but before doing so, Joe decided to give banking a try.

Joe values the variety of his job, a job that can find him closing a real estate deal in the morning, negotiating an SBA loan in the afternoon, and helping a startup evaluate its financing options in the evening.

And while his customers’ industries vary, Joe advises them all to build a “three-legged stool of support” that includes three strong professionals: an accountant, a lawyer, and a banker who will tell you the truth, even when it’s not what you want to hear.

Joe is a member of Edina Rotary Club and serves on its board of directors. He is also a member of the Edina Chamber of Commerce and the Explore Edina Visitors Bureau, having recently served as board chair of both organizations. He is also a member of the recently created Economic Development Committee in Edina.

A resident of Bloomington, Joe has two adult daughters and a toddler grandson. He enjoys reading, boating, and playing golf, and while he doesn’t keep a bucket list, there are two courses he wouldn’t mind playing someday—Augusta and Pebble Beach.

Brad Benesh

Senior Vice President, Business Banking

With four decades of banking experience—the past two focused exclusively on business banking—Brad understands what business owners need at every stage of the business life cycle, from idea to startup through growth, expansion, and exit.

His expertise has generated more than $100 million in loans for businesses in a wide range of industries and led to North American Banking Company being named Third-Party Lender of the Year by the Small Business Administration (SBA) of Minnesota in 2016.

One thing that makes Brad successful is his ability to listen. Another is his willingness to be honest. That sometimes means delivering disappointing news today in order to structure a better deal tomorrow, something Brad’s customers have come to appreciate in the years they’ve worked together.

Before joining North American Banking Company in 2006, Brad was vice president at two local community banks, Lake Elmo Bank and Eastern Heights Bank, where he also focused on business loans.

A graduate of the University of St. Thomas and a former radio DJ, Brad loves music. He also enjoys working out, playing golf, going to comedy clubs, and watching movies (especially “It’s a Wonderful Life”) with his family. He and his wife live in Lake Elmo.

Ben Loesel

Assistant Vice President, Business Banking

Ben was born and raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance with an emphasis on financial planning from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In the 20 years since he graduated, Ben has held a variety of positions in the financial services industry, beginning with many in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, where he sold insurance and other financial products for John Hancock and mutual funds for Strong Investments.

Eager to learn more about business, he joined Corporate Valuation Advisors where he performed business valuations for mergers and acquisitions. Then, in 2005, he made the switch to banking by joining US Bank as a commercial loan underwriter. The job was a great fit—Ben was quickly promoted to team leader and made responsible for credits in excess of $1 million.

Ben loved his job but realized that big banks weren’t always the best banks, so he joined a small community bank in Hugo, MN. He worked there for two years. Then, in 2011, he made the move to North American Banking Company, a community bank he’s proud to represent.

Ever interested in learning and improving his ability to help business owners succeed, he returned to school and in 2016 was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Minnesota.

A one-time professional poker player (also a perfect fit for someone who loves numbers and money), Ben enjoys golfing in the summer and watching Packer football (he’s a lifelong Wisconsite) in the winter. However, both activities pale in comparison to spending time with his wife Carrie and their young son Jack.

Ben is also an active member of the Woodbury chapter of Business Network International, where he makes frequent presentations to help business owners further their financial success.
